Kolkata court allows 'lie detector' test on RG Kar accused Sanjay Roy

A Kolkata court on Monday granted permission to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct a lie detector test on Sanjay Roy, the prime accused in the horrific rape and murder of a young woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The court's decision came after the CBI sought approval for a polygraph test as part of its ongoing investigation into the case that has shocked the nation.

The tragic incident occurred on August 9, when the body of the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was discovered in a seminar room at the hospital. The discovery sent shockwaves across the country, leading to widespread protests and demands for justice. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested the following day in connection with the crime.

The case took a significant turn when the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the investigation from Kolkata Police to the CBI on August 13, amid concerns over the handling of the case by local authorities. The CBI officially began its probe on August 14.

In a related development, on August 15, a group of individuals vandalized the emergency department, nursing station, and medicine store of the hospital in the early hours of the morning. This incident further escalated tensions and added to the controversy surrounding the case.

Earlier on Monday, Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, the lawyer representing the victim's parents, accused the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government of being involved in the vandalism at RG Kar hospital. His statement has added fuel to the ongoing political debate and public outcry over the case.
